Thank You, LORD! (Psalm 107)
Psalm 107, O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; How often we fail to thank the Lord for His goodness and mercy to us. It should always be upon our lips. It always has been (and always will be) the duty of God’s people to testify of His goodness. We, the redeemed, have an obligation to open our mouths before others to tell of the goodness of God to us. He certainly delivered Israel from the hands of their enemies. To this day, God delivers His people from the attack of the devil. Lord, thank You for saving my soul! When we are grateful for the people in our lives, thing’s God has blessed us with, or the circumstances we find ourselves in, it creates a spirit of thankfulness within us. However, when we pick apart the family and friends who are beside us, find displeasure with the things we have, or find fault with our circumstances, it creates a spirit of discontent. What’s wonderful about being grateful is that things in our life don’t have to change for us to be grateful. We can simply change our perspective by finding gratitude in our present circumstance whatever they may be. As a result, we will live a life with thankfulness. We should be thankful to the Lord for our family. I Thessalonians 5:18, In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. And that thankfulness comes from sincere place of gratefulness. In which, that gratefulness precedes gratitude that we find in every area of our life. Sure, we may have challenges with those we love; we may desire to live better and do better. But the truth is, God gives us more when we prove to Him that we are faithful and grateful with where He has us. If we can’t be grateful in our small house, how are we going to be grateful living in a larger house with larger expenses? We often complain about fuel prices. Consider those who don’t have a car. Many of us dread doing laundry every week. Well, instead of dreading the laundry, how about while you’re folding the clothes, you thank God for the clothes you have. How about thanking God for your family who is alive and well for you to do laundry for? What about cleaning the house? We don’t think there’s a single person who finds joy in cleaning the toilets, but when we change our perspective and choose to thank God for providing a roof over our heads, and not living on the streets; then we will gladly clean the toilet. What about having to get up every day and go to work. Sure, we would all like to pursue our dreams, or retire. But instead of complaining that you have to get up and go to work, thank God that you have a job, and you are not unemployed. Psalm 100:1-5 teaches us that every night, we have the opportunity to thank God for protecting us during the day. Every morning, we have the privilege of waking up to thank God for another day to fulfill His purpose for our life. 1. Be Heard! – Make a joyful noise unto the Lord (Psalm 100:1) 2. Be Happy! – Serve the Lord with gladness (Psalm 100:2) 3. Be Humble – Know the Lord has made us, and not we ourselves (Psalm 100:3) 4. Be Holy! – Enter His gates with thanksgiving (Psalm 100:4) 5. Behold! – The Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generation (Psalm 100:5) PRAYER: When I say “Thank You,” Lord, help me pause long enough to really mean what I’m saying. Help the attitude that should trigger those words be a more constant part of my character. Show me where I’m most lacking in gratitude, and give me strength to give You genuine thanks for those trying places. And I will be forever grateful, in Jesus’ name, Amen. Spiritual Fitbit (Psalm 37:23)
Psalm 37:23, The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. The FitBit was launched to the market in 2008 and has done very well. The FitBit monitors your heart rate, counts calories burned, records distance, counts steps, and other features. What’s impressive is that it motivates people to actively work out and become a healthier person. And yes, we all want to be healthier. The Lord wants us to be healthier both physically and spiritually. How can we become more spiritually fit? Psalm 37:23, The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. The thought then is how the path of a good man is established by the Lord. The word ordered has the basic idea of being ‘prepared’ or ‘established.’ God will guide & direct our steps. Walking in the Spirit involves at least three key characteristics: direction, dependency, and dedication. They are necessary in our spiritual walk. 1. Direction – (Psalm 32:8) Psalm 32:8, I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go. When we walk, we do so because we are headed somewhere. That is direction. 2. Dependency – (Proverbs 3:5-6) Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thy own understanding, and in all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. When we walk, we put one foot in front of another, leaning all of our weight on one leg for each step. That is dependency. 3. Dedication - (Matthew 16:24) Matthew 16:24, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me". That is the way it should be for all of us if we want to live a victorious Christian life. When we walk, and are attempting to go somewhere, we take continuous steps. One step is not walking. Continuous steps are. You have to keep taking steps in order to get someplace. That is dedication. III John 4, I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. God delights in the path of the righteous. Even as a parent delights in the steps of an obedient child, so does our Heavenly Father. In the Bible, God gives us specific instructions on what He wants us to do and where He wants us to go. Psalm 23:3b, He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. The Holy Spirit will lead you in your daily walk with the Lord. Galatians 5:25, If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Obeying and following His leading will help you immensely in living a victorious Christian life. PRAYER, Father in Heaven, thank You that You can be counted on to guide me through my day. Today I need to walk in the hope that only You can give. My way is unclear, my path sometimes feels like it twists and turns in confusing and busy ways as I wind my way along my journey. Show me Your ways, Lord. Show me how You would walk in these places. Remind me by Your Holy Spirit to look to You to guide me. In Jesus name, Amen. Ephesians 2:14, For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Two painters were in a contest where each said they could paint a picture of peace. One painter painted this sunset with the sun going down over the calm water. It all looked very nice and the picture had a very calming effect. The other painter painted a picture of a fierce storm. In it, the sky was dark and there was lightning, thunder, and dark clouds rolling overhead. The picture showed the waves crashing against the rocks. Things looked fairly chaotic. But in the corner of the painting, at the bottom, were two big stones with a bird in the middle of them. The bird was singing. Now that's peace. Peace is where God's calm and God's tranquility overrule your concerns. He has not only made peace and proclaimed peace, but Christ is our peace. Without justification it is impossible to have real peace. Conscience forbids it. Sin is a mountain between a man and God, and must be taken away. The sense of guilt lies heavy on the heart and must be removed. Unpardoned sin will murder peace. The true Christian knows all this well. His peace arises from a consciousness of his sins being forgiven, and his guilt being put away... He has peace with God, because he is justified.—J.C. Ryle Christ is our peace with God. There was a wall of partition separating us from God: our sin and guilt. But Christ came in human flesh to reconcile a holy God and His sinful people. In order to do so, He established righteousness for us, such as God’s law required, and satisfied the justice of God against us by pouring out His own life’s blood unto death as our Substitute. By His great atonement the Son of God has taken away the sin which separated God and His chosen people. By the power of His Spirit, through the preaching of the gospel, the Lord Jesus Christ has persuaded us who believe to be reconciled to God. He is our peace, because He has reconciled God to us by His blood and reconciled us to God by his grace. Christ is our peace with one another. He has made all believers one in Himself. Coming to Christ in faith, we are united in heart and purpose with all other believers. Faith in Christ destroys all those distinctions of the flesh which alienate sinful men: race, social standing, education, etc. In the kingdom of grace there is neither black nor white, male nor female, rich nor poor: but Christ is all, and in all. ‘He is our peace,’ because we are one in Him. Christ is our peace within ourselves. When Christ rules in a man’s heart, He causes that heart to be at peace. It is written: ‘Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee (Isaiah 26:3). “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (II Timothy 1:7).” He is our peace,’ because He brings peace to the heart. PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for the Prince of Peace and all the ways He brings peace to my life. Thank You first for establishing peace with me by allowing Your Son to settle all the debts and offenses that would have prevented me from ever knowing You. Thank You for the peace of Your presence and power in my life that overcomes all obstacles and draws me to You. In Jesus Name, AMEN! Philippians 4:6-7, Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. The word careful has the sense of ‘anxious’ or ‘worried.’ The thought is ‘don’t be worried about things.’ Rather than worrying about a matter, take it to the Lord in prayer and He will give peace of heart in the matter. How often we worry when we could have the peace of God within. Whatever we are facing or whatever we need we should pray about it. God’s children never have an excuse to worry. Paul enjoyed the intimate relationship with God both as a Father and Friend. Regardless of how much believers know about the Bible or its doctrinal truths, they must pray if they are to grow and be of service to God. Praying should be as natural for a disciple of Jesus Christ as talking to one's earthly father. Probably the best analogy of the importance of prayer is that of breathing. Prayer should be as natural to the disciple of Jesus Christ as breathing is to the human body, for prayer is the believer’s spiritual breath. The reason so many believers are always spiritually tired and weary is they have been holding their spiritual breath. NOTICE: The Christian who says, "I simply can't find time for prayer," is like the person who says, "I just can't find time to breathe." As a result, the disciple who does not pray regularly will spiritually suffocate. God always answers our prayers. It is very important to remember that sometimes God says "yes," sometimes He says "no," sometimes He says "wait," and sometimes He answers with even much more than what we asked originally. One of the great tragedies of modern-day Christianity is that we simply do not pray as we should. The Lord has placed all of the power and resources of Heaven at our disposal to do His work, “yet ye [we] have not, because ye [we] ask not” (James 4:2). Prayer is not an empty ritual, nor is it a religious exercise. It is how a child of God goes to the throne of grace based on the relationship He has freely given us to seek His help which He has promised to give. Though there are times when a quick prayer is all that is needed; think of Peter sinking beneath the water. However, in most cases, the serious issues we face will require fervent (passionate) prayer. Prayer, Lord, I humbly ask You to graciously restore within me the spirit of supplication and intercession. Forgive me for ignoring this important work and grant me a heart that desires to pray. I’ve been struggling with fear and doubt that has troubled the peace I have from You. I am casting these things Your way right now. I’m naming them and assigning them under Your care. I’m choosing not to worry about them anymore because You will deal with them under the authority of Jesus’ name, Amen. Psalm 91:4, He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler During a blizzard in South Wales, England, a young mother and her baby were making their way across the foothills when she was overtaken by the frigid storm. Failing to reach her destination, a group of searchers found her frozen body with her baby tightly wrapped underneath her; the child was warm and still alive. The mother had taken off her outer garments and covered her child from the cold. The child grew up to be David Lloyd George, Britain's Prime Minister and one of the greatest statesmen in England. His political and social greatness was made possible because his mother covered him in love. Much like David Lloyd George, our achievements in life can only be attributed to the covering of God's love. God is omnipotent, all-powerful. He will cover and protect us under His wings of care when we stay close to Him. The psalmist compared God’s care for His people to a bird gathering her young under her wings in order to protect them. The Lord will be our refuge, covering and protecting us in the dangers of life. The truth, or faithfulness, of God will be our shield and buckler. God has given us His faithful promises to use as our armor for life’s battles (Ephesians 6:10-20). We are protected by His faithfulness to His Word. Knowing that, we can have complete confidence that He will fulfill His promises to us. Through it all, however, God is our helper and He is always with us (Hebrews 13:5-6). In perilous times, we need to trust God to help us. When we abide in Him and live in the fullness of His Spirit, we can face every situation of life without fear. Whatever difficulties or dangers we may face, our Lord will be with us. The shadow of the Almighty will cover us through them all. Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your presence with me and that my future is secure in the place You're preparing for me. Your words bring me hope and comfort. Daily I catch glimpses of Your glory and blessing along the way as I walk with You. In Jesus name, Amen. John 11:36, Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! Oh, how He loves you and me, Oh how He loves you and me. He gave His life, what more could He give? Oh, how He loves you; Oh, how He loves me; Oh, how He loves you and me. Jesus to Calvary did go, His love for sinners to show. What He did there brought hope from despair. Oh, how He loves you; Oh, how He loves me; Oh, how He loves you and me. It is said that one of the most distinguished statesmen of the times of the American Revolution was once a hopeless drunkard. He had been engaged to a beautiful girl, but his debauchery had compelled her to break the engagement and sever herself from his influence, which was dragging her down. She had not ceased to love him, or to pray for him. One day she was passing along a road. She saw him lying intoxicated by the sidewalk, his face exposed to the blistering sun, and swollen with drink and exposure. Her tender heart was moved, and, as she passed by, she took her handkerchief and gently spread it over his face. An few hours later he awoke and saw the handkerchief and her name stiched on the corner of it. He arose to his feet, and a cheerful thrill of hope and courage came to his heart. "She loves me still," he said, "all is not yet lost. For her sake I will redeem my life." And he did.... Oh how much more power there is in the love of Christ to save lost men from despair, if they can only believe that He loves them! He left us the Bible, His lover letter to us. 1. Jesus Loves You Eternally. There never was a time when He did not love you. His love for His own is without beginning and without end. It is eternal. 2. Jesus Loves You Perseveringly. Though we sinned in Adam, were born in sin and lived in sin by deliberate choice, His love for us was never broken. Though we sin still, after experiencing His grace, His love does not cease or grow cold. His love is patient, longsuffering, lasting and enduring. God will never cease to love those whom He has always loved. His love is immutable. 3. Jesus Loves You Sacrificially. ‘Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us.’ I know that God is good and kind to all men. His compassion reaches to all people. He will not stand idly by and allow one soul whom He loves to perish, when He has the power to save that soul! He so loved us that He voluntarily laid down His life in our place! So mighty is His love that, when He knew the price of our souls was His own precious blood, He willingly poured out His life’s blood to redeem us! 4. Jesus Loves You Satisfyingly. His love will be satisfied. He will never lose the object of His love. He will give us all that we can need or desire for all of eternity. He will withhold no good thing from His own. In that great day which is yet to come, God’s creation will stand back in awe and wonder and say, concerning His redeemed people, ‘Behold how he loved them!' PRAYER: Lord thank You for loving me unconditionally with a supernatural love. May my love for You be shown in my love for those You have given me. In Jesus name, AMEN! Hebrews 12:15, Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; There was a woman who was sick after being bitten by a dog. She went to the doctor to see if the dog had rabies. He examined her, did a number of tests and told her the bad news. “I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but I’m afraid you’ve contracted rabies.” The doctor left the room for a minute, and when he returned the woman was busy writing on a piece of paper. He asked, “What are you doing, writing your will?” She said, “No, I’m making a list of all the people I’m going to bite before I die.” There was a lot people she was bitter at. That’s just the way most people think about revenge. When a person becomes offended and doesn’t deal with that offense correctly, that bitterness often churns so long in a person’s soul that it turns into a root of bitterness. God is telling you that if you don’t repent of bitterness and remove it from your life, it becomes deeply embedded in your soul. Once it becomes this deeply rooted in your soul, your negative opinion of the offender will become firmly fixed. Where does bitterness come from? Bitterness can come about as the result of what others do to us or say about us. Sometimes, bitterness can result from the events of life themselves, as we blame God or others for our troubles. Bitterness will affect every relationship within your life, but it will affect your relationship with the Lord most of all. A man who hates to be slapped on the back, packs his coat with TNT and waits for this man who always slaps his back. His idea is when he hits me, I will get him, I'll blow him up. Hate kills both the person who you hate, but also yourself as well. Hating people is like burning down your own house to get rid of a rat. Hatred and bitterness hurt the hater much more than the one hated. Hating someone holds little effectiveness. The one that is hated often is unaware of it and is unaffected by it. Yet the one who hates is often consumed with the feelings and allows them to govern thoughts and actions. We cannot control everything that happens to us, but we can control how we respond to the things that happen to us. A wise one once said, "I will never allow another person to ruin my life by making me hate him." Whenever someone does something to us, we can choose how we will respond. Right now, you may be in a mess, but it is never too late to follow the Lord. There is a price to pay for disobedience, but God can take the broken pieces of your life and mend them back together. The Holy Spirit is willing, ready and waiting to help you grab hold of those roots of bitterness and pull them clean out of your life. All He needs is your invitation, so why don’t you go ahead and ask Him to assist you right now? PRAYER: Father in Heaven, I ask You to examine my heart and expose any resentment or unforgiveness lest any root of bitterness would spring up inside me. Help me to walk in the Spirit that I may produce the Fruit of the Spirit. In Jesus name, AMEN! If this post has blessed you in any way please share this website and its articles with others: www.fellowshipbaptistcarrabelle.com Correction in the Reflection (James 1:22-24)
James 1:22-24, But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. Many years ago, while on a visit to America, a wealthy Chinese businessman was fascinated by a powerful microscope. Looking through its lens to study crystals and the petals of flowers, he was amazed at their beauty and detail. He then decided to purchase a microscope and take it back to China. He thoroughly enjoyed using it until one day he examined some rice he was planning to eat for dinner. Much to his dismay, he discovered that tiny living creatures were crawling in the rice. Since he was especially fond of this staple food in his daily diet, he wondered what to do. Finally, he concluded that there was only one way out of his dilemma—he would destroy the instrument that caused him to discover the distasteful fact! He then smashed the microscope to pieces. "How foolish!" some would say, but many people do the same thing with the Word of God. They despise it and reject it because it reveals their sinful nature. It reveals God's conditions for salvation and the consequences of rejecting His authority. Ignoring God's Word or rejecting it does not change the standard that the Lord has laid down for mankind of what is right and wrong. In fact, ignoring or rejecting His Word will only damage your life. James uses the illustration of looking at our natural face in a mirror. The phrase natural face simply means "the face one was born with." The purpose of a mirror is to give an accurate reflection of the person looking into it. And when you look in a mirror you see exactly what you have to deal with. The word beholdeth carries the idea of a" casual, haphazard glance." A "hearer-only" of the Word gives attention to what he hears but ends up forgetting or neglecting what the Lord was speaking to him about. He looks into the mirror and sees his face, but he goes on without concern. That is contrary to the purpose of mirrors. We look into the mirror to see what needs work before we go out. What you do with the Bible will determine what God does with you. God wants us to put His Word into action in our lives. That is how we will change and become more like Christ and that is how others will be changed as they are won to the Saviour. The world does not need a definition of religion as much as it needs a demonstration. The Bible is like a mirror. When we read the Scriptures, it shows us who we really are. James says that a hearer is like a person who takes a quick glance at the mirror and then immediately forgets what he saw. The doer looks intently into the mirror and does not forget. He sees what needs to be fixed and he fixes it. Prayer, Father in Heaven, help me to walk the walk and not just talk the talk. May I take Your Word seriously and work hard at practicing what I learn from it. May my life reflect Jesus Christ in a way that people will know I am His before I ever open my mouth. May I not do this for the applause of men, but that You would be pleased with how I use the life You have given to me. In Jesus’ name. Amen. I Samuel 27:1, And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand. David has reached a very low period in his life. No doubt that David is discouraged, decides to flee Israel for refuge in Philistia. David did not trust Saul and he had every reason to distrust Saul. Saul had shown himself unstable and emotionally imbalanced. His jealousy and hatred of David were well known. Notice: In the previous verse, I Samuel 26:25, Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place. Saul had already once broken a promise to no longer hunt him. David knew Saul was lying and as a result he became very discouraged and fled to Philistia. In I Samuel 26:24, David sought the Lord. However, in I Samuel 27:1, David is not recorded as consulting with God. It is apparent, that his faith lapsed. He focused on his circumstances not on God. How sad it is when unbelievers believe and believers do not believe. It is one thing to encounter disappointment. It is another thing to allow disappointment to solidify into discouragement. When one is in this state of mind, one’s faith often fails. Therefore, the devil uses discouragement to get the eyes of God’s children on Him in hopes that we might quit. God had faithfully intervened over and over again to deliver David from the hand of Saul. God had demonstrated His power on behalf of David over and over again and had delivered him. He delivered him out of the mouth of the lion and the paw of the bear. He delivered him out of the hand of the great giant Goliath. Did David forget how God delivered him? NOTICE: David's pessimism compared to God's power.
Prayer, Lord, too often through the eyes of the flesh, I see my battles bigger than You. Help me to trust in You and see them as You see them. There is never a problem I encounter that is greater than You. In Jesus name, AMEN! If this post in any way, has blessed you, please share this website and its articles with others: www.fellowshipbaptistcarrabelle.com God’s Power is Greater than Our Problems (Revelation 19:6)
Revelation 19:6, And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the LORD God omnipotent reigneth. The problems that seem so overwhelming to you are not overwhelming to God. This is because God is omnipotent. The word "omni" means "all." The word "potent" means powerful and mighty. God has all power. According to Revelation 19:6, nothing that is taking place on the earth, no matter how difficult it may seem, is a challenge to God's mighty power. God always is in complete control, whether it appears that way or not. When you face problems that seem to have no solution, you should turn to the One Who can solve every problem, no matter how difficult it seems. God is so great that your limited human understanding cannot even begin to comprehend the magnitude of His majesty and power. Sometimes the problems we face are created by our wrong choices. Although we created them, we cannot control the outcome. But God can! God is not in Heaven wringing His hands, pacing back and forth before His throne, wondering how He can solve the seemingly difficult problems that you face. Psalm 147:5, Great is our LORD, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. God knows exactly what to do when you do not know what to do. The word "infinite" means without limits. There is no limit to the power and understanding of God. Job 23:13, But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth. Nothing can stop God from doing what He wants to do. Your Father instructs you to constantly turn to Him with deep, strong and unwavering faith. He wants you to turn to His Word with absolute faith, knowing that He will do exactly what He says He will do. The same God Whose mighty power created everyone and everything in Heaven and on Earth is never overwhelmed by anything that takes place on the earth that He created. Jeremiah 32:17, Ah LORD God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee: Absolutely nothing is too difficult for God. Refuse to focus on the seemingly unsolvable problems you face. Focus continually on God Who can solve problems that seem to have no solution. God is so mighty and powerful that He was able to raise Jesus Christ from the dead and sit Jesus next to Him in Heaven. If God was able to do this, He certainly can solve whatever problems you face. When you face difficult problems that seem to have no solution, you must have absolute faith that your Father knows exactly what to do to solve these problems. Refuse to give up. When you cannot see any way out of the problems you face, your Father can see the way out. He will guide you out of these seemingly impossible problems if you trust Him completely. He will lead you down paths that you know nothing of. He will turn darkness into light. He will never forsake you or leave you. Meditate on these truths pertaining to God's mighty power. Refuse to allow any problems you face to seem greater than God. Nothing is greater than Almighty God. Place all of your trust in Him. PRAYER: Lord, I thank You that You are the God of the impossible. I have nothing to fear with You on my side. I want to trust in Your ability and not my own. Help me to focus on You and Your power. Help me to be strong and courageous even in the difficult times. I choose to have faith in Your ability to break through every obstacle in my life. In Jesus name, Amen!
