Digging Deeper into God's Word

Standing on the Promises of God Without Losing Your Footing (Psalm 123:1-3)

Psalm 121:1-3, I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Life is a journey. Along the way we face numerous difficulties. These difficulties can either be stumbling blocks or stepping-stones. Psalm 121 instructs us how we can turn stumbling blocks into stepping-stones.

Jerusalem was surrounded by hills, being 2550 feet above sea level. The paths to Jerusalem were treacherous. As a traveler approached Jerusalem, he would be faced with mountains on every side. These traveler’s safety was threatened as they would face rocks, uneven terrain, slippery spots, obstacles, rough weather and robbers and other dangerous conditions. Still God’s people walked on with confidence that the Lord was keeping watch over them. They definitely needed to stay alert and to do everything they could to avoid injury. Ultimately, the Lord guarded their steps. The worshippers were prone to grow weary or to be easily distracted, but they rejoiced in the certainty that the Lord never slumbers or becomes weary. He diligently protected them and would not allow their feet to be moved; that is, He would not let them fall. Their journeys are a lot like our own lives because we too, are pilgrims that are traveling through this world. Here we find the thoughts of the psalmist are upon the Lord as he approached the city. The Bible tells us about a source of help Who is greater than any problem imaginable.

It was not the hills he was focusing on, it was He who was above them. He knew that his help would not come from the hills. The Psalmist turned his attention to the Lord! He knew that the real source of his help was Almighty God. Jeremiah 3:23, Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel. David’s help didn’t come from the mountains, but the God who made the mountains. He was looking beyond the mountains to the One who made them. He asks himself, “Where does my help come from?” David knew his help came from the LORD.

We can look to the Lord for help because He is our security, our protection, and our guide. Israel's confidence was in a God who neither slumbered or slept; after all, sleep is only a need of our created bodies. God is alert at all times, watching over us, knowing our needs. We probably could not comprehend the things that have not happened to us because of God's providence and protection. We are aware of when we are threatened, delivered from danger, survive an accident, and we thank God for delivering us, but we do not know all the things that did not happen because He was caring for us. God keeps us from stumbling by falling into sin and going astray.

What was true back then is still true today. In the Lord we have absolutely all the help we need to navigate the obstacles of life as we journey to our ultimate destination, Heaven. We know that He has all the wisdom we need and all the power we need. Above all else, we know that His wisdom and power are ours, as His watchful eye is on us each step of the way.

Sometimes the only thing we can see are our mountains or hills. God wants us to look higher than our hills at Him. Even when the outlook of your present circumstances may seem dark, the “uplook” is always bright when you focus your faith on the Lord and rest in his care. Those who look up will be lifted up. Rather than trying to solve all your problems on your own, starting by searching for His help. Micah 7:7, Therefore I will look unto the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.

We are weak. We struggle with fatigue and sleep. We struggle with failure and stumble. When it comes to our Lord, it is a different matter. He does not struggle, stumble, and He does not sleep. You can look higher than your hills if you rest in the fact that a loving Saviour watches over you.

We are pilgrims, and our pilgrimage began the very moment that we received Jesus as Lord and Saviour and it will continue until we step out of this life and into eternity. Along the way, there are dangers waiting all around. There are thieves that would rob us of peace, joy, and victory.

God knows how easy it is for us to slip into sin and into discouragement. We must remember that He is always with us and has promised to sustain us with His presence and His power. The foundation, God's infinite power and goodness, is the foundation that our faith is built on. It cannot be moved. While we stand firm on it our foot cannot be moved.  God will keep your foot from slipping while traveling the journey of life.

Life does not always offer many easy steps. Sometimes we get to the point when we wonder, can we make it one more step. Often when we slip and fall, we are tempted to just give up. Those who get their help from the Lord, will continue on their journey. We need to remember that the Lord has never made a house that fell, nor a foundation that crumbled. There will be times when we feel like giving up and giving in, but we need to realize that He has lifted us out of the miry clay of this world and has established our goings. We are constantly being reinforced and help steady by the mighty hand of God.

God is ever present. He cares about us and will never leave us or forsake us. God would help His people by establishing them in a firm place, allowing them to stand and not allowing their foot to be moved. Because the Lord is with us, we can “walk” through our valleys and look higher than our hills with confidence because of the evidence of His power and promises. We can go through our valleys and look above our mountains knowing the Lord keeps us and He is with us no matter how high our mountains may be. He is with us always.

The Believer’s Stand in Jesus is Seen in:
  • We stand in grace (Romans 5:2)
  • We stand in the Gospel (I Corinthians 15:1)
  • We stand in courage and strength (I Corinthians 16:13)
  • We stand in faith (II Corinthians 1:24)
  • We stand in Christian liberty (Galatians 5:1)
  • We stand in Christian unity (Philippians 1:27)
  • We stand in the Lord (Philippians 4:1)
  • We stand perfect and complete in the will of God (Colossians 4:12)

Question to Consider:
Does your help come from friends, family, athletic ability, academic skills, popularity, wealth?

Point to Ponder:
The source of all security and help is the Lord who made heaven and earth and controls all things.

PRAYER: LORD, often I get weary on the journey because the path of life looks uncertain. I know that You are always with me and that You will never fail me. Help me to trust in You always. In Jesus name, AMEN!
