When Anger Rears Its Ugly Head (Proverbs 14:29)
Proverbs 14:29, "He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly." The difference between those whose anger controls them and those who control their anger is not found in whether things happen to provoke anger. All of us are going to experience disappointments, hurts, and insults from time to time. The question is how we will respond. We have the choice of keeping our anger in check no matter what has transpired. While there is a time and a place for righteous anger, far more often we “fly off the handle” and respond in the heat of the moment. Thomas Jefferson said, “When angry, count to ten before you speak. If very angry, count to one hundred.” Knowing that an immediate reaction is likely to be wrong, we should carefully consider our response when we are provoked. If you quickly grow angry and lose your temper your wrath will place you in great danger. There is great wisdom in being slow to wrath and controlling one’s anger (James 1:19; Proverbs 15:18). In our case, our temper can cost us our job, our marriage, our health, our testimony and closeness with people we love. Temper tantrums can damage the relationship with your wife, kids, or friends, making it difficult to communicate or be close to them because they have been hurt by you or don't trust you. If you are a pastor that struggles with losing your temper, it can hinder your effectiveness in ministering to the people of your church. In fact, you may lose them. A lady once came to Billy Sunday and attempted to rationalize her angry outbursts. She said, “There’s nothing wrong with losing my temper. I blow up, and then it’s all over.” Mr. Sunday replied, “So does a shotgun, and look at the damage it leaves behind!” There are some people who make excuses for their anger. They say, "It just runs in my family." Or belittle it by joking that they are like a loaded shotgun with a hair trigger. Anytime they are pushed into a corner, they blast away. Then they say, "Oh, well, my anger only lasts a little while." Well, so do tornadoes, but look at what damage they can cause! When you are quick to get angry, you can lose so much. You can lose your job, friends, children, wife, health, and testimony. There is nothing more debilitating, devastating, or unbearable to your Christian testimony than for you to fly off the handle. We need to bring our anger to the Lord and ask Him to help us act like Him toward those who offend us. Some of us need to get before the Lord today and ask for help, because we know that we might not be angry right now, but it could happen before the lights are out tonight. And, we know that when anger comes, we will need God’s help to respond properly. Others have been simmering in your own anger for quite a while now. The best thing you can do is get to the Lord and ask Him to turn down the heat in your heart before you have a meltdown. Submit your unbridled anger to God. Allow Him to redirect this powerful emotion for His glory. There will be plenty of things which will make you angry. How are you going to deal with them? If you give them to God, you will have peace; but if you hold onto them, you will be a wildfire waiting to break loose. Prayer: Father, I know that sooner or later I will experience anger. Help me, to handle it wisely that it doesn’t control me. When that time comes give me strength to give it to You for Your glory and for me good so that it does not consume me. In Jesus name, Amen. Listening to God (James 1:19)
James 1:19a, Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, ….. Best friends since childhood, a wall-street investor and a farmer walking through Central Park conversing. At one point the farmer said to his friend, “Did you hear that cricket?” His banker replied, “With all the noise in this park, how do you hear a cricket?” The farmer said, “You hear what you train yourself to hear.” To prove his point, he took a few coins from his pocket and threw them on the sidewalk. Everyone nearby immediately stopped and looked. If we are going to walk with God in the midst of a society that is set on going in the other direction, we must hear His voice. There will always be other voices calling out to distract us from our course, but our ears should be open and eager to hear what God has to say. This is what James had in mind when he instructed us to “be swift to hear” (James 1:9). Though the world speaks loudly, God often whispers. This was the experience Elijah had when he was alone on a mountain, he witnessed loud and powerful events: “And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice” (I Kings 19:12). Hearing that “still small voice” is vital to the renewal of our strength for the Christian walk day after day. But it does not happen unless we are willing to focus our hearing to discover what God has to say. Jesus spoke of those who know Him hear His voice. John 8:47a, He that is of God heareth God's words: ... John 10:4b, … and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. There are times when God speaks loudly, but most of the time He speaks in a still small voice. If we are wise, we will be listening intently when He does. To do so, we must plan some out some quality time with God each day and study His Word and allow Him to guide you. Questions to Consider:
Points to Ponder:
Prayer: Lord, every day of my life there are many things I hear. Some I’d rather not hear and others I need to hear. No one else gives me greater joy than to hear from You. When I open my eyes in the morning, I long to hear from You. When my head rests on the pillow at night, I desire you hear from You. When troubles, successes, sadness, and joy come my way, I yearn to hear from You. Whether I’m fearing or at peace, my delight is to hear from You. In Jesus’ name, amen. Psalm 119:14, I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. What happens when we refuse to read the Bible? 4. Your Love becomes Deadened (Psalm 119:14) Anytime we neglect consistent time with the Scriptures it increases our struggle in battling sin, in finding comfort and strength in God, in serving Jesus and in loving God’s Word. Pursuing consistent time with Scripture allows us greater knowledge of our Creator and brings us into a more intimate relationship with our Lord. Then why do we need the Bible? For the simple fact that exposure to Scripture increases our joy in Scripture. If you want to remain passionate about the Bible, then do not depart from God’s truths. This is where many believers get into big trouble. They drift from God and end up drowning in their disobedience, making destructive decisions, chaotic choices and catastrophic conclusions. Sin fights to keep us from God and His Word. Sin is the reason why so many Christians struggle with regular time in God’s Word. Living in sin will affect your attitude toward God and His Word. It’s been said that “sin will keep you from this Book and this Book will keep you from sin”. The more familiar you become with the love-filled, hope-giving message of God the more it breeds a greater joy from the Bible and a greater desire to spend time in it. Even the parts of the Bible we don’t grasp ultimately increase our joy, because they increase our trust—we may not grasp what is happening, but we know that God does and that He’s working for His glory and the good of those who love Him. The Bible tells us God’s character: He loves His creation and hates sin. He will justly punish those who persist in doing evil, He is pleased to save those who humbly seek Him, He is creating a holy people for Himself out of those who were once angry, violent rebels. Just as lovers take joy in learning of each other, we also take joy in learning of our Lord by which He tells us of Himself in the Holy Bible. Psalm 18:21, For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God. Following God’s guidelines and principles will help you to avoid terrible mistakes. As you see God blessing your life because of your obedience to His Word, you will fall in love with it more and more. Proverbs 5:7, Hear me now therefore, 0 ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t. If you want to fall in love with the Bible, then hunger for its words. Prayer: Heavenly Father, Your Word is the greatest love letter ever written. Thank You for the comfort, healing, encouragement and direction it provides. Its words are so precious to me that they never stale, expire, and never bore. Yet I am not satisfied and want to crave Your Word more and more. Help me to continually run to Your Word and meditate on it. Open my eyes that I may see all the wondrous things Your Word has for me. In Jesus' name, Amen. Psalm 119:28, My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word. What happens when we refuse to read the Bible? 3. Your Hope Becomes Diluted (Psalm 119:28). One principal way God chooses to impart His strength is through the testimony of Scripture. Through His Word, we see His character, His work, His faithfulness, His justice, His promise, and His love. These give us strength in suffering because they remind us of the truth—that we are being made into the likeness of our greatest love, Jesus, and are being prepared to live with Him in glory. This doesn’t mean we won’t have heartache and setbacks on earth, but that we have an unshakable hope to get us through those times. Romans 15:4, For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Why did God give us His written Word when He could have just sent angels? The Bible was given to us to provide hope. The things God has shown us in His Word are for our learning. The Old Testament is overflowing with examples of faithful perseverance and encouragement which gives hope for the New Testament people of God. Without the hope we receive from the Bible, we will more easily fall into despair. Feelings of hopelessness will grow instead of security in the promises of God. If we neglect the Scriptures, life’s trials will toss us about, we will be succumbed to every sorrow, and plagued by the pain of the world. Scripture tells us that we will spend eternity with God if we have accepted the free gift of salvation through His Son (John 3:16). His Word gives us promises that we can cling to. We can be confident that the things God has said will come to pass. We have the hope that we will be in Heaven with Him (John 14:6). We have the hope that all things work together for good to them that love God (Romans 8:28). We have the hope that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:5; Psalm 23:4; Isaiah 41:10; Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5). These truths from God's Word should be a comfort to us. One of the greatest needs that we have is to just have hope in the midst of dark days, when we don’t understand what is going on. Just being able to keep trusting God no matter how dark it looks. Just keep having hope in the Lord. No matter what we may face, God has promised His help and presence, His protection and guidance, and His love and mercy. We know this because He has given us His Word. Take some time this week to thank God for the comfort of the Scriptures and the hope we have through them. This was PART 3, visit the website tomorrow for PART 4. Prayer: Heavenly Father, my hope is in You. thank You for sending Your Son to be my hope. You knew that this world would never satisfy my longings, and so You sent Your precious Son to do that. Forgive me when I look to anything else for my hope, and thank You for the pain that reminds me when I have moved my hope into anything other than Christ. In the name of Jesus, our living hope, amen. Psalm 119:32, I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart. The Lord energizes us for His work through His Word. Consistency in our Bibles helps us run with the work He has given us. It helps us put aside what entangles us and serve God more effectively and efficiently. Without the nourishment of Scripture, we easily lose steam. We become spiritually winded and require more rest, more time away from the active pursuit of Jesus’ earthly work. We will be slow and begin lacking energy and will. What happens when we refuse to read the Bible? 2. Your Service Becomes Deflated (Psalm 119:32). Frances Chadwick was one of the great open water swimmers of all time. She was the first woman to swim across the English Channel in both directions, and she also broke the time records for making the long and difficult swim. In 1952, she set out to cover the twenty-six miles from Catalina Island to the coast of California. After Chadwick had been swimming for about 15 hours, she was surrounded by a thick fog and began to struggle. She told her mother, who was in one of the boats accompanying her on the trip, that she didn’t think she could make it. After struggling a little longer, she gave up. It wasn’t until after she got in the boat that she learned she had only been one mile from shore. The next day she told an interviewer: "I’m not excusing myself. But if I could have seen the land, I think I might have made it." Two months after her failed attempt, Frances Chadwick was back in the water to again attempt the swim from Catalina to California. Again the fog set in after she had been swimming for hours, but this time instead of quitting, she pushed on and reached the shore. Regardless of how much fog surrounding you, stay in the water. I Corinthians 15:58, Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. So often we fall short of doing what we should for God because we get discouraged and lose heart just before we would have seen the victory. We must not be impatient when we do not see results immediately. The fact that we have not yet received the promises of God does not mean that we will not—every promise of God is certain from the moment He made it, whether it has yet come to pass or not. This was PART 2, visit the website tomorrow for PART 3. Prayer: Father in Heaven, help me to be patient and to keep my eyes fixed on You as I run the course. At times, weariness has tried to attack me, and other outside pressures have made me feel tempted to throw in the towel. But I will not surrender to any pressure to bend, break, or bow out. The Holy Spirit will empower me to hold tight, hang on, and remain steady and steadfast. I pray this in Jesus’ name! James 1:23-25, For if any be a hearer of the Word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. Sam was covered in mud. “What happened?” his mother asked. “We played tackle football in the mud.” As Sam headed up to shower and clean up, he looked into the mirror. The mirror didn’t help him get cleaner, but it showed him how dirty he really was. When he got into the shower, he picked up a bar of soap. Standing in the shower and holding the bar of soap wouldn’t help him get clean, either. Just because he has the tools to do the job doesn’t mean the job will get done. It isn’t until Sam uses the soap and water that he can be clean. Psalm 119:10, Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. How can you clean up your life? It’s not by looking at yourself to see what is wrong. It’s not by taking the Word of God and seeing what you should do. It’s by taking the Word of God and applying it to your lives. Knowing right from wrong doesn’t get rid of the dirt in your life. It’s not until you take heed to what God has said that your life will change. James tells us to be “doers of the word, and not hearers only.” James gives the example of someone who looks into a mirror and sees himself but does nothing about it. Looking in the mirror is useless unless he does something about what he sees. We all have things in our lives that we need to change. Recognize what God has said in His Word, and then listen and obey, don’t just hear. What happens when we refuse to read the Bible? 1. Your View of Sin Becomes Distorted (Psalm 119:1-3). When we do not spend time with God’s Word, our comprehension of the scope of Jesus’s work is stunted. We are not given daily, fresh insight into how much we owe him, how great his gift is. Our love for Him grows slowly and pitifully apart from daily nourishment at His Scriptures, which remind us of our state without Jesus and with Him. When we begin to neglect the Scriptures we will notice that our love for the Lord begins to fade, our comprehension of His grace becomes insufficient, our guilt for sin becomes nonexistent. This was PART 1, visit the website tomorrow for PART 2. Prayer, Heavenly Father, it amazes me how Your Word sheds light on my deepest sin issues. It is true I have many sins that I would rather deal with tomorrow. I know that is wrong, Lord, and many of my sins don’t just harm me, but harm those I love as well. Help me have the courage, strength, and desire to deal with my sins and take them to Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen. If this post in any way, has blessed you, please share this website and its articles with others: www.fellowshipbaptistcarrabelle.com God Has A Plan For You (Jeremiah 29:11)
Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. When we are going through trials it is of great comfort to know that God allows nothing to come into our lives without first passing through the hands of our Heavenly Father. If we are to rise above our circumstances, then we need to look at our circumstances from God's point of view. Fervent prayer and continual studying the Scriptures will help you learn how to do this. What does this mean to you? Below are five things: 1. God made plans for you before the world began. He has plans for you now. You are not a mistake. You are purposed for greatness (John 10:10; Ephesians 2:10). Jesus is the Good Shepherd. Not only does our Lord offer eternal life, He offers a fullness of life in the meantime. The Christian life surpasses anything the world can offer. 2. God's plans for you are bigger and better than your plans for yourself (Ephesians 3:20). Think of your greatest aspiration and then acknowledge the fact that God's desire for you is much bigger than anything you've ever imagined for yourself. 3. Remain faithful over what you have been given charge over. Even if it seems like no one is noticing, God is. He is paying attention to what you do and how you do it. He will remember, recognize, and reward you. 4. Never give up. Your life may seem dull, ordinary, and common, but we serve a God who can turn your life around in an instant. Keep your hopes up in the midst of dark days, when we don’t understand what is going on. Remain in faith daily. Trust God every step of the way. Just keep having hope in the Lord no matter how dark it looks. 5. God can turn your life around. One swing from God can take you from fearful to a mighty man of valor (Gideon), from a barren man to a father of nations (Abraham), from a fisherman to a fisher of men (Peter), from an extremist to an evangelist (Paul), and from a shepherd boy to a king (David). Serve God faithfully become the man/woman God has called you to be! Prayer: Father in Heaven I know You love me and it amazes me that You made plans for me before the foundations of the world. Thank You Father for caring for me. I know the thoughts and plans You have for me are for Your glory and for my good. Whatever I may face today, I can expect that You are working for good in all of it. So I’m going to step forward in faith, trusting You in all things and seeking to cooperate fully with Your plans for me. I know I can’t imagine all the good You have planned for my life, but I also know it’s all coming in Jesus’ name, so I can say, amen! Daniel 5:25-28, And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. Most of us have either used or heard the expression “the writing is on the wall”. The expression 'the writing is on the wall' is used whenever an inevitable result or imminent danger has become apparent. While many have used this saying, some have no idea where it comes from. It comes from the Book of Daniel found in the Bible, God’s Word. Have you ever tried to tell someone that what they are doing is wrong? It is not easy, especially when it is someone in authority over you. Daniel interprets the writing on the wall. It was a message of impending doom. Daniel told the king the truth with boldness and courage. God was patient and longsuffering with this king, yet the king refused to worship the LORD. MENE. Means "to number." God had numbered the duration of the days of Belshazzar's kingdom and was about to bring it to an end. Belshazzar's number was up! At that very moment the Persians were entering the city. Babylon was finished, it was all done. TEKEL. Means "to weigh." The word "tekel" indicates the dearth or deficit of the king. The king had been evaluated by God, weighed in a balance and found wanting. UPHARSIN. This is from a combination of two words. Means "to divide" and the word pharsin which means "the Persians." It indicates the division and destruction of Babylon. The kingdom was to be broken up or divided and given to the Medes and Persians. Persia, who is represented in the image of Daniel 2 by the silver chest & arms. What then did God mean when He told Belshazzar he had been "weighed in the balances, and art found wanting"? The answer is really very simple. Belshazzar had neglected the knowledge he had received. He knew about his grandfather Nebuchadnezzar's faith in Daniel's God following his years of living like an animal. Belshazzar rejected that truth and refused to believe in the one true God. All of us have been "weighed in the balances, and art found wanting." The apostle Paul made this point very clear in his letter to the Romans. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" (Romans 3:23). We've all missed the mark in terms of measuring up to God's perfect standard. The Lord Jesus Christ was the exception. Jesus is sinless (I Peter 2:22; I John 3:5; II Corinthians 5:21). He was the God-man. God was His heavenly Father and Mary His earthly mother. Being without sin, He became " The Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. " (John 1:29). He sacrificed His life on the cross to pay for our sins and to provide eternal life to all who receive Him as personal Saviour (John 1:12; Romans 6:23). Prayer, Father in Heaven, thank You for being patient with me when I chose not to prioritize You. You put up with my mistakes while the whole time passionately seeing that I become more like Christ. Help me to be more patient and longsuffering with others. In Jesus name, Amen. If this post in any way, has blessed you, please share this website and its articles with others: www.fellowshipbaptistcarrabelle.com Storms of Life (Acts 27)
Acts 27 speaks of a great storm that occurred at sea, causing Paul’s fourth shipwreck, while he was on his way to Rome. Although the ship was damaged beyond repair, thankfully, no one on board lost his life. The Lord knows where we are and what we go through! Amid a great and long storm there was on the ship the man of God who had a word from God. Christian’s should give words of hope and encouragement in times of darkness and trials! We know the Lord Jesus and the forgiveness of sins and we have been given the Word of God and we are the light of the world! Paul was letting his light shine on the ship in the dark and difficult days. Paul gave an address to the crew—he began to preach and exhort the people. Obviously, they should have listened to Paul's warning. In such a critical hour of need Paul had a word from the Lord, but the people resisted his warning. Much of the world’s problems today are because people will not listen. Many will listen and receive the advice from the philosopher, the psychologist and the professor, but reject men like Paul. Because the crew was stubborn and prideful they would not listen to Paul and the result was that they experienced disaster and loss. It pays to pay attention to men of God with a Word from God! You may be in the midst of a difficult storm right now. Your life may be headed in a direction contrary to God's will, but if you belong to Him hope remains. The children of God are going to make it home. Storms will come our way, but we are secure in Jesus; therefore, believe God and trust in Him. He is greater than any storm we may face. He can either calm the storm or calm us in the midst of the storm. If we could see Him as He is, we would find peace and refuge. Is Jesus at the helm of your vessel? Are you following His direction, or have you chosen to chart your own course? Going contrary to the will of God is never a good decision. The Lord stands ready to restore you, but you must seek Him. If you are going your own way things will soon get out of hand, if they haven't already. If you are not part of the family of God you are charting your own course. As of yet, you have failed to admit your need for the Lord or His guidance in your life. He stands ready to save and direct your life as well. Come to the Lord and receive the peace that only He can give. Questions to Consider: Trials can make us either better or bitter. What makes the difference? Is it a sin to be discouraged? Why/why not? It is easy in a trial to feel angry toward God? Is this ever permissible? If so, how? If not, how do we deal with it? Sometimes our attempts to encourage someone fail. How can we offer genuine encouragement in Christ? Are there things that we should avoid saying or doing at such times? Prayer: Lord, as we sail through life's storms, may Your presence and rule in our lives preserve our trust in You. May we not allow the winds and waves to draw us aside from serving You faithfully, wholeheartedly, courageously. When we must decide whether to believe circumstances or the Sovereign Lord, may we again and again choose to trust in You. May others see You in us and come to know You too. In Jesus' name, Amen. Galatians 4:4-5, But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. When a mule's mind has been made, it takes a whole lot of persuading to get him to "unmake" it. A farmer had a mule he owned for many years. Over that time, he picked up on the mule's stubborn streaks. He got so good, he could see a stubborn streak coming and going. He also learned how to get the animal's attention: whenever it acted up, he beat it on the head with a wooden board until it decided to obey him. One day, another farmer stopped by to return some borrowed tools. He watched the farmer hit his mule on the head and said, "Well, it looks like you've figured out how to fix his problem." The farmer said, "I just know how to get his attention. He hasn't been cured yet." When God wanted to get the world's attention, He didn't beat us over the head with a board. He gave us His law so we would know that we were sinners who fell short of perfection (Galatians 3:24-25). The law showed us that our hatred was murder and our covetousness was idolatry, etc. It got our attention in a way nothing else ever could. God is also merciful. Not only did He get our attention, but He also provided a cure for our problem. Paul wrote that God sent Jesus "to redeem them that were under the law." He was talking about each one of us. By ourselves, we could not be restored to a relationship with Him. But God wanted us to be freed from sin and to live in harmony with Him. So He sent Jesus "that we might receive the adoption as sons." He sent His Son to die and shed His blood to pay for all of our sins, so we could go to Heaven. Once we get saved, God starts to work in our lives to help us be like Christ. God loves you, and wants a personal relationship with you. He wants you to be part of His family and it is His gift, and it is available to each of us. When a person accepts Jesus Christ as their Saviour, that person is adopted into the family of God. The implications of this new sonship include eternal life and cleansing from all sins. If the believer needs further assurance, God has provided it in His Word. There’s no doubt about it, Christian. When you put your trust in Christ, you’re in the family — for good. Don’t second-guess it. Don’t doubt it. Just live like it. Today. Has God been trying to get your attention lately? Maybe you heard a preacher give an invitation to put your trust in Christ. You were convicted about your sins, but you never accepted Christ as your Saviour. Get the matter settled today, once and for all. God doesn't try to get your attention to hurt you, but to get you to try His cure. Won't you trust in Christ right now? Prayer, Father, thank You for sending Jesus. Thank You that I could be adopted into Your family. Thank you for being my Father. In His name. Amen.
