Almighty
Almighty speaks of all power, ruler over all, omnipotent. This word appears 48 times in the Old Testament. This word appears ten times in the New Testament, all of which except one are in the book of Revelation (II Corinthians 6:18; Revelation 1:8; 4:8; 11:17; 15:3; 16:7, 14; 19:6, 15; 21:22)
Reading the following references will accurately give the reader the picture of the immense greatness of God and His power over everything.
1. Genesis 17:1, And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
This is the first mention of the wonderful title of God. By this name He revealed to Abraham His power to supply every need of man, both physical and spiritual. There would be no need of any kind in any human life that could not be met completely and fully by the Eternal God who wears the Name "Almighty." God revealed Himself to Abraham (Genesis 17:1-2), to confirm that He had the power to keep His promises to make Abraham a great nation (Genesis 12:2) and to make his seed as innumerable as the dust of the earth (Genesis 13:16) and the stars of heaven (Genesis15:5), even though Abraham and Sarah were past the childbearing years.
2. Exodus 6:3, And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah was I not known to them.
The title in this verse refers to the power of God to deliver Israel from their oppressors. He is Lord over every other lord and is able to deliver His own people from every form of oppression.
3. Psalm 91:1, He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Here this title is used to describe God's power and ability to protect and preserve His children through all the vicissitudes, troubles, sorrows and problems of life.
4. II Corinthians 6:18, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the LORD Almighty.
This title describes the God who is able to supply every temporal need of His own people who refuse the provision of this world, and refuse to accept deliverance or provision from the children of Satan. Those who sever themselves from a place of dependence from the world and reject Satan's schemes, find that God is able to furnish them with all their necessities.
5. Revelation 1:8, I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the LORD, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
In this passage the Lord Jesus is given the title because of His sovereign ability to begin everything, and to make everything, to sustain everything, and to bring everything to an end. It describes His power to judge everything and everybody. Nothing is beyond the reach of His power. The strength of Christ's might and the majesty of His stability exceed all others and all else in the ability and authority, for His is omnipotent.
When in reference to the Lord Jesus Christ, then, this word declares that He is, indeed, "the Sufficient One," "the Omnipotent, All-Powerful God," and "the Ruler of All." We do not worship a limited God, a God who can do only certain things under special circumstances. We worship God Almighty (Genesis 28:3; 25:11; 43:14; 48:4; etc.)
