Dilemma of Doubt (Numbers 14:1-3)
Numbers 14:1-3, And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt? “We’re claiming the entire land, it’s ours!” This should have prompted singing, shouting and rejoicing. We’re going to take the land God has promised us. Remember the plagues, the Red Sea, Mt. Sinai, the manna and much more. He has never failed us before. According to Numbers 14:1-3, they weren’t. Why? They were surrounded by complainers and doubters. This was not just a few people, but the entire congregation. We see in Numbers 14:3-4, they even entertained the idea of selecting another leader to take them back to Egypt. They were planning a mutiny against Moses. In effect, they were saying, “We’re going back to Egypt. We are better off as slaves in Egypt. God will not give us the victory here.” This type of thinking is totally contrary to their amazing experiences with God. Why were they thinking this way? They had forgotten about God’s provisions. The pillar of cloud by day, the pillar of fire by night, the dividing and crossing of the Red Sea, manna every day, etc. God had miraculously brought the Children of Israel out of Canaan and promised them a fruitful land. Yet when the Israelites saw some obstacles, they wished they were back in slavery in Egypt. This sounds absurd to us, but do we ever have a similar response? Don’t desire to go back to your former ways; have faith to move on to the more abundant blessings the Lord has for you. I have never trusted God and regretted it. Yes, at times, the challenges have been huge. I can remember times when I have chosen doubt and missed the incredible opportunities to prove the faithfulness of God. I remember how disappointing I felt afterwards. When a believer is backslidden, they tend to run from God’s purpose for them. When a Christian is carnal, they tend to not think wisely. Despite the promises of God, and in spite of His miraculous deliverance and provisions, Israel claimed they would rather have died in slavery in Egypt. They went so far as to accuse God of bringing them there to die. They were willing to return to the bondage from which God had graciously delivered them. When times were tough, Israel failed to look to their God. Doubt is a very common, human, natural struggle. One of the hard things about struggling with doubt is overcoming the feeling of your struggle with those feelings of doubt. To overcome doubt, one must confront doubt with truth. People who have trusted the Lord, when faced with doubt, have an impeccable track record. Take God’s Word and trust Him in it. Be fully prepared to fight, but fight honestly with your struggle. Arm yourself to acknowledge it, face it, name it, and then overcome it with truth. God never intends for His people to wander wearily through life, headed nowhere. God has for you a land of milk and honey, a life of victory, if you’re willing to follow him in obedience. Rather than forfeiting to your fears and being defeated by doubts; follow your faith in the Lord. PRAYER: Lord, I truly want to defeat the doubt I struggle with in life. Arm me with Scripture that I may defeat the devil with the power of Your Word. In Jesus name, Amen. Beware of the Little Things (Song of Solomon 2:15)
Song of Solomon 2:15, Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines [have] tender grapes. Song of Solomon describes the love between a man and his wife. In many ways it also pictures the love between Christ and the church. The vines represent the vineyard of growing love between the two lovers. Tender grapes have resulted from their love, but there is a great danger to the continuing of this love. It is the danger of the little foxes. These foxes can spoil the vines on which is located the tender grapes. Therefore, our verse is a call to remove these “little foxes” so that the vineyard of love will continue to prosper. What are the little foxes? They are the seemingly little aggravations which can ruin love. They are little words and acts of conduct which can hurt the growth of love between a husband and a wife. These things seem like “little” foxes, but they can ruin the vineyard of love. The Scriptures warns us to be careful of the little foxes, the small foxes that want to enter into our vineyard and corrupt it. The little foxes represent those things in our lives that seem to be small, insignificant, unimportant, those things that have just gotten a start in our lives. We must be careful letting new things get a grip in our life. Little foxes are very dangerous things, things that often go unnoticed, things that enter in unannounced, things that are unrestrained. Some of the little foxes that can bring great harm to a marriage are the little cutting words of a husband and wife. It does not take a long, critical dissertation to disturb the vines of love. Love thrives on compliments, not on cutting remarks. Many failed marriages started simply with little, unkind words. If we would be honest with ourselves, none of us plan on forsaking God, none of us have considered a specific time to fall by the wayside. The road to corruption never starts with something big, obvious; it always starts with giving heed to the insignificant, the unimportant and the small. We drop our guard, we think that we have arrived, we feel secure in our own strength, but remember, it is not the lion or the bear that spoils the vines, it is the little insignificant foxes that bring destruction. Points to Ponder: He knows the little foxes. He knows your thoughts, your secret sins and words that have grieved Him. Little things can hurt devotion as well as big things. Take care that you do not let little things ruin your devotion to the Lord, your spouse, your family etc. Questions to Consider: Have you dropped your radar? Have you let the little things find entrance into your life? How many are running free in your life? It may have pricked your heart at first, but you explained it away, you excused it away, you failed to expose it for what it really was. Are you able to admit this? Can you call them out and expel them? PRAYER: Father, often I focus on the few major things rather than focusing on the many little things that are spoiling my relationship with You and my family. Help me to pursue You and daily chase away these little spoilers. In Jesus name, Amen. James 1:19a, Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, ….. Best friends since childhood, a wall-street investor and a farmer were walking through Central Park conversing. At one point the farmer said to his friend, “Did you hear that cricket?” His banker replied, “With all the noise in this park, how do you hear a cricket?” The farmer said, “You hear what you train yourself to hear.” To prove his point, he took a few coins from his pocket and threw them on the sidewalk. Everyone nearby immediately stopped and looked. If we are going to walk with God in the midst of a society that is set on going in the other direction, we must hear His voice. There will always be other voices calling out to distract us from our course, but our ears should be open and eager to hear what God has to say. This is what James had in mind when he instructed us to “be swift to hear” (James 1:9). Though the world speaks loudly, God often whispers. This was the experience Elijah had when he was alone on a mountain, he witnessed loud and powerful events: “And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice” (I Kings 19:12). Hearing that “still small voice” is vital to the renewal of our strength for the Christian walk day after day. But it does not happen unless we are willing to focus our hearing to discover what God has to say. Jesus spoke that those who know Him hear His voice. John 8:47a, He that is of God heareth God's words: ... John 10:4b, … and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. There are times when God speaks loudly, but most of the time He speaks in a still small voice. If we are wise, we will be listening intently when He does. To do so, we must plan out some quality time with God each day and study His Word and allow Him to guide you. Questions to Consider:
Points to Ponder:
Prayer: Lord, every day of my life there are many things I hear. Some I’d rather not hear and others I need to hear. No one else gives me greater joy than to hear from than You. When I open my eyes in the morning, I long to hear from You. When my head rests on the pillow at night, I desire you hear from You. When troubles, successes, sadness, and joy come my way, I yearn to hear from You. Whether I’m fearing or at peace, my delight is to hear from You. In Jesus’ name, amen. Nahum 1:7, The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. President Calvin Coolidge was awakened one morning in his hotel room to find a burglar going through his pockets. Coolidge spoke up, asking the burglar not to take his watch chain because it contained an engraved charm very precious to him. Coolidge then engaged the thief in quiet conversation and learned he was a college student who had no money to pay his hotel bill or buy a ticket back to campus. Coolidge counted $32 out of his wallet declared it to be a loan, and advised the young man to leave the way he had come so as to avoid the Secret Service! Although this young man never earned, nor deserved mercy, Coolidge showed this young man mercy rather than justice. Surprisingly, the loan was paid back. God declares and demonstrates His goodness to His children. Nahum described the mercy and goodness of God. He is good! He is a refuge for help in the day of trouble. Furthermore, God knows those who trust in Him. He knows His own. … The Lord knoweth them that are his (II Timothy 2:19). He has promised to bless those who trust in Him (Psalms 2:12; 34:78; 40:4; 84:12). Those promises remain to this day. Three traits which comfort Christians in turbulent times: 1.His Mercy is Pure (The Lord is good) This verse declares the goodness and mercy of the Lord. Although God’s mercy is something we are not deserving of, we should be very grateful for it. Only the heart of a divine Saviour can love us at the level we receive. 2.His Mercy is Preserving (a strong hold in the day of trouble;) God is a help in trouble, not just in the good days, but also in the days of trouble. Many things and people can help us on good days but when trouble and calamity comes, their help ceases and is not adequate. "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1). It is the Lord Himself, His presence, that will shelter and protect the person who places his faith in the Lord. No matter the trouble (whether terrifying trial, seductive temptation, or simple problem) the Lord is good and He cares for those who trust in Him. The Lord will shelter, protect, and deliver the believer into the very presence of God Himself. 3.His Mercy is Personal (he knoweth them that trust in him) Believers will not face the vengeance of God because the Lord knows those who trust Him. The word knows suggests a close, personal relationship, a deep, intense, loving relationship. The Lord knows those whose faith and hope are in Him. He knows them because true believers walk with the Lord, fellowshipping, sharing, and talking with Him. They live righteously, obeying His Holy Word and commandments. The Lord and His dear people have a close bond, a very personal relationship. Therefore, when His people face trouble, whether mild or terrifying, the Lord is a refuge, or stronghold, for them. Prayer, Father in Heaven, use me as a sanctified vessel, to pour out mercy and love without measure on other people. Father, we live in a world where there are so many hurting people. Help me to stretch out a willing arm of comfort, when I see other people hurting or in pain. May Your Holy Spirit empower me to bless and help all those whom I come in contact. In Jesus name, Amen! Matthew 24:11-12 “And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” Is it possible today for our love for the Saviour to wax cold? In Revelation 2:1-4, did not the church at Ephesus have the indictment of a frigid love for Christ? Is it possible to willingly work, live the Bible standard, refuse to side with evil, flush out and expose the false prophets and fakes, but wax cold in our love for the Saviour? Yes! At an alarming rate believers are freezing to death while the damaging effects of cold Christians leave the ministry untouched. Today’s forecast calls for icy winds which threaten Christians with conformity, worldliness, immorality, infidelity, pornography, divorce, etc. Workers of evil strategize everyday to freeze the love and labor of God in our lives. May we be aware of this warning and enter our prayer closets and pray for the spiritual thermostat of believers to be turned to heat. May we pray that the Holy Ghost fan the spiritual flame and blows embers into the hearts of believers. In Ecclesiastes 4:9, 11; Hebrews 10:24-25, God’s Holy Word demonstrates one of the blessings of believers worshiping together to be the action of “stirring up” one another. This is meant to ignite, incite, or provoke in our mind’s eye to the image of a bonfire burning with firewood stacked one over the other. When the bonfire begins to die down, one must stir the firewood to feed the flames and keep the fire burning. The same is true when Christians congregate to worship God in spirit and in truth. A man huddled on a cabin floor was slowly freezing to death. It was high in the Rockies in southwestern Alberta, and outside a blizzard raged. John Elliott had logged miles that day through the deep snow of the mountain passes. As he checked for avalanches, and as dusk and exhaustion overcame him, he decided to rest. He made it wearily to his cabin, but somewhat dazed with fatigue, he did not light a fire or remove his wet clothing. As the blizzard blasted through the cracks in the old cabin walls, the sleeping forest ranger sank into oblivion, paralyzed by the pleasure of the storm's icy caress. He began the gentle downward spiral of hypothermia. Suddenly, however, his dog sprang into action, and with unrelenting whines, finally managed to rouse his near-comatose friend. The dog was John's constant companion, a St. Bernard, one of a long line of dogs famous for their heroics in times of crisis. "If that dog hadn't been with me, I'd be dead today," John Elliott says. "When you're freezing to death you actually feel warm all over, and don't wake up because it feels too good." This moving story illustrates the spiritual condition of many Christians today. They are cold spiritually, and sadly, are oblivious of their true condition. Thank God for all the ways in which He arouses such sleepers. He sends His messengers to nudge them awake. Sometimes the methods used to awaken them are drastic, but always for their good. He shakes us to awaken us spiritually. He awakens us from lethargy because He loves us, and wants to save our lives from apathy, waste and ineffectiveness. Is the Lord trying to wake you up? Have you lost your compassion for others, for those who are lost or hurting? PRAYER: Lord, Help me to never grow cold towards You, others and Your Word. May I do all I can to encourage others to serve You and lead others to come to know You. In Jesus name, Amen. Revelation 1:5, And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, He “loved us”. This shows continual action. His love resulted in action. He washed us from our sins in his own blood. What a price He paid for our redemption. The price was blood. There is only one ransom, the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Concerning sin, the Bible declares, without shedding of blood is no remission (Hebrews 9:22). Blood is the Divine requirement to pay for sin. The only Source of the cleansing our sins is by, and through, the shed blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our good works and own righteousness are as filthy rags in God's sight! He has washed us from our sins in His own blood! Jesus shed His own blood on the cross of Calvary in fulfilling that Divine requirement so that He might wash us from our sins in his own blood. He loved us before we were washed. He “loved us” all the way through; backward in time and eternity, or forward as far as is possible. Before God created the Heavens and the earth He loved us. We were stained in sins. Being washed means the stain has been taken away. Nobody can de-stain us like the Lord. The blood of Jesus is so powerful that it can get the stain out. As a matter of fact, the Lord used what you might call a “divine washing machine”. He takes that washing machine and once He places you in the divine washing machine, when you come out, you're whiter than snow. You are washed and free of stains. He has “washed us from our sins in his own blood.” The cleansing property of the blood of Christ is made clear. It is not the “washing”, but what’s in the “water”, that cleanses. Detergent has a synthetic substance that wipes away and cleanses any dirty or foul matter. The blood of Christ is a “detergent” in that it separates us, frees us and loosens us “from our sins.” He is our surfactant for the guilt of sin. A surfactant is a surface-active agent or solution used for purging or cleansing. The detergent has agents that dissolve the dirt from the fabric and attaches the dirt to itself and is then flushed away. This fact can be read on the back of any detergent product. John 8:36, If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. God alone can remove sin. This means that for God, every sin you have ever committed, every evil thing you have ever done, you are still doing, and will continue to do forever is apart from God’s forgiveness. Only the omnipotent, eternal God, who controls all the factors of time, space and matter, could ever remove sin. He gives us freedom from the stain of sin. Guilt is the stain. For many people, a visual stain on their clothes leads one to become embarrassed or ashamed. Christ cleansing power frees us from any and all guilt before God. PRAYER: Lord, thank You for the blood Jesus shed on the cross for my sins. I stand justified before You because of Christ’s sacrifice. In Jesus name, AMEN! Isaiah 54:17, No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD. God not only controls but He conquers. No enemy will overpower if God stops them. God's people can comfort and encourage themselves in knowing that God will conquer evil. Evil will not prevail though it looks difficult and invincible to man. The day is coming when no nation will attack Israel. There will not even be the threat of such (every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn). This will be the legacy of God’s people in that day. Their righteousness will be of God.
In great victory, God proved He is Lord to the Egyptians and to His own people who saw the great work of God. He saved His people. He removed His enemies. He improved the defense capabilities of His people with weapons. The Lord moved His people through an overwhelming obstacle. The Hebrews had confidence in God for they did not run in a panic, but walked across in faith. The Egyptians reaped their sown seeds. God avenged the blood of the firstborn Jewish babies who were drowned hundreds of years earlier. Egypt destroyed the helpless ones and then become helpless, losing their defenses. PRAYER: LORD, I come to You asking for power and protection. You know my enemies’ strategies and tactics. I know its because I’m a follower of Your Son, Jesus, that all these things are against me. Psalm 63:1, O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;” Nothing else is quite like the aroma of a fresh pot of coffee early in the morning. In fact, many are dependent on it every day, particularly the first thing in the morning. I’m amused at the bumper sticker I read once, “No Coffee…No Workee”. Or this comment a wife gave her husband before they had their morning conversation, “Woah, I have not had my coffee yet.” Understand, that just as important as it is for people to have that cup of coffee first thing, isn’t it more important to have time with the Lord first thing? There’s no questioning it, many people are addicted to coffee. They must have their fresh brewed cup of coffee in the morning to get a little caffeine into the system. The pleasure even begins when preparing the coffee. From spooning the coffee from the canister to brewing it the pot. Coffee is one of the simple pleasures in life that many will never tire of and will always be dependent on. Coffee always goes great with morning conversations and brings pleasure when shared. For most, you cannot get enough coffee. Some want coffee filled to the brim, to the point that it is running over. Coffee! How do you like it? Smooth? French Roast? Bold? Intense Bold? Some prefer their coffee different from than how others would prefer it. Just as people depend on, seek and drink coffee for numbers of reasons, so people seek the Scriptures for various reasons. God’s will is for people to be awake and alert, not groggy and tired. As many seek coffee to bring about alertness, let me encourage you to seek the Scriptures as a means to pursue and bring about His Will for your life. Some prefer Psalm, Proverbs, Gospels etc. Whatever the desire, or direction, the Lord is leading you to that day, get in it.
Psalm 5:3, My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. God desires that believers read His Word every day. But where does one read? Keep in mind, all Scriptures are inspired of the Lord. Therefore, pray and ask Him where He would lead you to. Whatever the need is the Bible has the answer. But some need one particular portion of Scripture over another due to what the need is or how the Lord is leading them. PRAYER: Lord, I know that You have something to reveal to me in Your Word. My soul craves to be drawn to Your Words. In Jesus name, AMEN! If this post in any way, has blessed you, please share this website and its articles with others: www.fellowshipbaptistcarrabelle.com Trusting God Against All Odds (Judges 7:2)
Judges 7:2 Therefore, the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me. God intended to deliver Israel from the hands of Midian at the hands of Gideon. However, He also intended to make it very clear who gave them the victory. Lest Israel, in pride, take credit for their deliverance; God would make clear it was He who delivered them. Why does it seem like God likes to use an underdog? Just think, He used a shepherd boy with a stone and sling to kill a giant covered in armor and trained in warfare (I Samuel 17), the Israelites walking around to topple a walled city (Joshua 6), and a man with donkey's jawbone to kill 1,000 men (Judges 15). God shows His might when the odds are against us. However, there are times when God makes the situation seem worse in order to show His power. Take Gideon for example. The Midianites and Amalekites had come upon Israel to destroy it. The Bible says they were like grasshoppers for multitude and as the sand of the sea. When Gideon called for troops, 32,000 men responded. While this was a decent number of people, they were still incredibly outnumbered. However, God told Gideon that there were too many for Him to give Israel the victory. The reason was because He didn't want Israel to think they had done it. They were greatly outnumbered, but if God gave them the victory, they would have thought they did it themselves. God told Gideon to let the fearful return home, and he was left with only 10,000 troops. However, this was still too many so God then reduced the number down to 300. We would think 32,000 against a multitude compared to the sands of the sea would be a miracle, and 10,000 men against that many would surely show God's power, but God wanted to make a point by using only 300 men armed with pitchers, torches and trumpets. He made it clear to Israel, the Midianites and Amalekites, and everyone else who heard the story that God did it. God can do the same thing in our lives. It always seems that God has a strange way of fighting battles. God wants us to trust in Him even when life is hard and it seems all odds are stacked up against us. Maybe He wants to use you to show that He is still mighty. Maybe you have been asked to teach a Sunday school class and you don't think you are able to do it. Maybe you have been put in a difficult situation financially and you don't know how you can pay your bills. Trust God to provide what you need, and see His promises work. When God takes our impossible situations and works them out He receives the glory He deserves. Trust Him with your impossible situations today. PRAYER: Lord, too often, through the eyes of the flesh, I see my battles bigger than You. Help me to trust in You and see them as You see them. There is never a problem I encounter that is greater than You. In Jesus name, AMEN! Today is a day when we take the time to honor the one person who unselfishly gives herself to her children time and time again, without asking for anything in return. If your life has been blessed by the touch of a godly mother, then you have enjoyed one of this world's greatest treasures and blessings. Not everyone has enjoyed this great blessing but those who have will go to their grave remembering the love of their mother. We set aside one day a year to honor mothers. Take the time today, to visit, call, text, send her some flowers, or do something to let her know that you love her and that you respect and honor her today. Mothers today are often misunderstood for someone who cooks, cleans and takes care of the children. But a mother is a much more vital part of the family. In fact, mothers are one of the most influential people on earth! From the time children are born, they are constantly connected to their mother. They depend on their mother for food and water. They look to their mother when they are frightened or are in need. Children are dependent upon their mother for physical and emotional provisions. Think about the fact that God ordained the home for a purpose. He had a plan for each member of the family, and God has ordained the mother to be significant in the lives of her children. Today we honor mothers and thank them for their hard work. Think back to when you were a child. Do you remember all that your mother did for you? Remember the time she made your favorite meal, or the time she cleaned off your cut when you fell off your bike, or maybe when she cheered you on at your sports game, or perhaps the time she stayed up late helping you with a school project. It has been said that a mother spends an average of 92 hours a week doing everything from being a taxi driver to being a chef! Your mother has worked hard and sacrificed a lot for you over the years. "The love of a mother is never exhausted. It never changes, it never tires, it endures through all. In good repute, in bad repute, in the face of the world's condemnation, a mother's love still lives on." Washington Irving This is something I was given in seminary. I wanted to share with you. Hope you enjoy: What My Mother Taught Me My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE. “If your going to kill each other, do it outside - I just finished cleaning!” My mother taught me about PRAYER. “You better pray that will come out of the carpet.” My mother taught me about TIME TRAVEL. “If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you in the middle of next week!” My mother taught me LOGIC. “Because I said so, that’s why!” My mother taught me FORESIGHT. “Be sure you wear underwear in case you’re in an accident.” My mother taught me IRONY. “Keep laughing and I’ll give you something to cry about.” My mother taught me OSMOSIS. “Shut you mouth and eat your supper!” My mother taught me CONTORTIONISM. “Will you look at the dirt on the back of your neck!” My mother taught me STAMINA. “You’ll sit there ‘til all that spinach is finished.” My mother taught me WEATHER. “It looks as if a tornado swept through your room.” My mother taught me PHYSICS PROBLEMS. “If I yelled because I saw a meteor coming toward you, would you listen then?” My mother taught me HYPOCRISY. “If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a million times - don’t exaggerate!!!” My mother taught me THE CIRCLE OF LIFE. “I brought you into this world, and I can take you out.” My mother taught me BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION. “Stop acting like your father!” My mother taught me ENVY. “There are millions less fortunate children in this world who don’t have wonderful parents like you do!” If this post in any way, has blessed you, please share this website and its articles with others: www.fellowshipbaptistcarrabelle.com |
